HISTORY OF Dr. M.G.R. UNIVERSITY ( Special Autonomy Status )

Aiming to bring the change and progress through higher education in chennai, the Tmt.Kannammal Educational Trust was constituted in 1985 and started Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College in Chennai. Within 3 years of its inception, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded in 1988, and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was started in the year 1991. Both the colleges acquired Deemed to be University status in 2003 as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute as per the orders of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi. Recently this university received special status “Special Autonomy Status”.

Keeping this in mind Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute University was started with a vision of providing a better education for the students of today & tomorrow to face the challenges in society. To succeed in the world of today you need more than just academics. The modern students are expected to have a combination of technical knowledge and enough confidence. Being aware of the demand in higher education that is placed on the youth today, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University has preserved to nurture and groom young men and women through Engineering, Medical, Dental and Humanities and Sciences and many more courses like Job oriented courses, Hotel Management, Aviation Management etc.

Admission procedure into this prestigious DEEMED University is on merit-based, while consideration is given to norms set by the respective statutory councils like the AICTE, DCI, MCI, Nursing Council and the National Council for Teachers Education. Admission is open to students from all over the india and world who will be selected on the basis of an entrance exam. The university provides adequate representation to students coming from the underprivileged sections of society. Physically challenged ( Special child ) students and students who excel in sports are also given preference.

The University has adopted a flexible credit-based system, with high standards in the design of its educational system. The B. Tech degree programmed are divided into eight semesters, while the Master’s degree programmed are split into four semesters. Part-time Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses are also available, keeping in mind the needs of working professionals the classes are conducted in the evenings.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND REGULATIONS

Application form for all courses can be obtained in person by payment of Rs.1000 by cash or a Demand Draft of Rs.1000 in favour of Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, payable at Chennai or Direct admission can be take at university campus.

PAYMENT OF FEES
Candidates will have to pay the prescribed fees as mentioned in the Admission Form. The fees can be paid by cash or by Demand Draft in favour of Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, payable at Chennai. Fees once paid is not refundable under any circumstances.

NRI-SPONSORED STUDENTS
Students sponsored by NRIs should produce employment certificate, passport, visa in original along with photocopies duly attested by a Gazetted Officer of the Sponsor.

FOREIGN NATIONALS
Candidates should have a valid student visa from the Indian Embassy. Students must surrender passport and visa to the University Office for further verification at the time of admission. All selected candidates will have to produce a Medical Certificate in the prescribed format from a qualified registered Medical Officer.

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)

Under General Category 60 % marks on aggregate in physics, chemistry and Biology (Botany/Zoology) and English. ( NEET is Mandatory )

B.Sc Degree from any Indian University (recognized by the association of Indian University and accepted as equivalent by the standing Academic Board and Governing council of this University) with one of the following subjects as major subject-Physics, Chemistry, Botany, zoology and one other science subject at least up to ancillary level: provided such candidate should have passed the earlier qualifying examination (Higher Secondary or equivalent) with the subjects English, Physics, Chemistry, Botany/Zoology. Candidates who are not from 10 + 2 structure of the national committee will have to undergo a one year Pre Professional training before getting admission to Dental Colleges as laid down by the Dental Council of India.

For candidates who have studied in abroad, the eligibility will be determined by the Association of Indian Universities. They should have passed in Physics, Chemistry, Botany/Zoology and English with 50% aggregate. Admissions process are made subject to approval of the Govt. Any criteria is not covered under above provisions will be subject to the ruling of the Eligibility committee and candidates should appear the NEET and get qualified.
